The Feminist Movement By Marjane Satrapi - 2711 Words
Since ancient times, women have not been considered equals to men in society. The farther back in time, the more suppressed women are depicted. The 1900ââ¬â¢s, conversely, has sparked a worldwide effort by women to fight for more freedoms equality, known as the feminist movement. The feminist movement follows the feminist theory, which provides an outline of the inequalities and oppressions women face. Womenââ¬â¢s roles in the workplace, home and in society have vastly changed since this feminist push. It is the result of grassroots movements and individual efforts that has allowed women to gain more power and parity. In Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, the young Iranian protagonist, Marjane, attempts to free herself from religious and social inequalities through the use of direct and indirect forms of protest and self-realization. Marjane is a prime example of how Iranian women, at that time, attempted to promote their cause through demonstrations and acts of civil disobedienc e. Known as one of the major sociological theories, the feminist theory attempts to analyze the status of both men and women in contemporary society. Its main purpose is to use the knowledge gained to better help the lives of women everywhere. The feminist theory is mainly concerned with offering a voice to women and highlighting how women have made positive contributions to society. Four main problems outline the theory: gender differences, gender inequality, gender oppression, and structural oppression.Show MoreRelatedThe Complete Persepolis By Marjane Satrapi1017 Words à |à 5 PagesThis pepper identifies and analyses some of the highlights found in the culture narrative of a visual comic memoir titled ââ¬Å"The Complete Persepolisâ⬠by Marjane Satrapi, and a culture storyline, ââ¬Å"Code Whiteâ⬠by Debra Anderson. The Controversy of Cloning free essay sample
A look at cloning from a moral and ethical perspective. This paper discusses the new emerging technology of cloning. The author looks at the scientific advantages and moral implications of this new phenomenon. Only four years after scientists cloned a sheep in Scotland, the ability to clone human beings is about to make the transition from science fiction to science fact. In recent news, announcements have been made regarding both the advancement of technology to clone and the interests expressed by some to utilize this technology. One such case is of an American couple who lost their 10-month old child to complications during a minor operation. Instead of having another child, they wanted this child. The couple felt that their little sons genotype deserved another chance (Talbot 40). We will write a custom essay sample on The Controversy of Cloning or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The couple, well financed with money from a malpractice settlement, enlisted a science-loving religious sect called the Raelians to take frozen cells from their deceased child and make every attempt to clone him (Talbot 40). Many support its use, while others cringe at the thought. A study of how beer advertisements refer to or signify something other than the actual physical liquid Essay Example
A study of how beer advertisements refer to or signify something other than the actual physical liquid Essay Advertisements are a true reflection of the society we live in. A methodical study of advertisements can lead to an understanding of attitudes, beliefs and priorities of the citizens. This essay will confine itself to a few salient beer commercials that were run in the television screens of American homes over the course of last few years. Commercial 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRcZSViUr4Afeature=related Firstly, let us consider the Budweiser beer advertisement released on October 2002. As Johnny Cashââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Ring of Fireâ⬠plays in the background, a man is shown to go picnic. Instead of a female partner, he romances with his basket of iced beer, applying it sun-cream, throwing Frisbee at it and taking it on a boat ride. The ad finally ends by posing the question ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s your relationship with your beer?â⬠, implicitly suggesting that it can be the same as one with your partner ââ¬â a loving, caring and romantic relationship. There are several cultural cues available to the viewer. The most striking allusion is to ââ¬Å"commodity fetishismâ⬠as evident in the interchange of romantic love with the commercial enterprise of beer consumption. The ad elevates the habit of consuming beer to the mystique, irrational and more meaningful relationship between a couple in love. The ad also indicates strong association between country music, rural America and beer consumption. The other cultural signifiers in the commercial are the favored American tradition of going picnic with family, enjoying the natural beauty offered by the lake and the park, etc. We will write a custom essay sample on A study of how beer advertisements refer to or signify something other than the actual physical liquid specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on A study of how beer advertisements refer to or signify something other than the actual physical liquid specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on A study of how beer advertisements refer to or signify something other than the actual physical liquid specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Commercial 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUjGayIkI6gfeature=related In another commercial for Bud Light, named The Elevator, a team of security guards think of a novel way to date a girl. A guard alights into the lift along with a pretty girl, with a basket of iced beer in his hand. His buddies in the control room deliberately halt the lift midway, giving an opportunity for their mate to socialize with the girl; the task is made simpler by beer. It is of cultural interest to not that the guy is black and the girl is white, indicating the changing racial relations in America. The other cultural reality portrayed by the commercial is that of ââ¬Å"datingâ⬠, which is identified with the initial stages of a long term relationship. Commercial 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJAyPuw9Rbofeature=related In another popular beer commercial that integrates the concept of ââ¬Å"commodity fetishismâ⬠, the jealous ex-girlfriend performs black magic on a miniature figure (which represents her ex-boyfriend), who is incidentally attracted to another girl in a Bar. The voodoo-like acts she performs on the miniature figure is translated onto the real person. For example, when she burns the figure her ex-boyfriend sweats of heat. To cool down, he consumes a bottle of beer, which not only makes his sweat disappear, but also takes him to the toilet. When he relieves himself there, the miniature doll darts liquid onto the lighter held by the ex-girlfriend, thereby putting it off. From popular culture point of view, this ad is again targeted at male audiences, suggesting to them that a beer can get rid of girl trouble, which betrays a sexist attitude among American men. All the three ads discussed were essentially targeted at men, suggesting to them that a beer can either get them a girl, get rid of their girl-trouble or play a substitute role of a girl; all of which are demeaning to women. In all the three ads, women are objectified and treated as sex-objects, representing the narrow-minded attitude toward women exhibited by most American men. Surely, feminists will find these advertisements very offensive and feel that the status of women in America has not improved a lot, even after the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Porters 5 Forces for Car2go Project in Osaka, Japan
Introduction The use of Porterââ¬â¢s five forces in analyzing the business plans is something that is today almost synonymous to the process of strategic marketing planning. These five forces, advanced by the renowned macroeconomist and Harvard scholar; Michael E. Porter in 1979, essentially help in guiding business planners on what to expect in their new business ventures and how they should handle their challenges as well as opportunities.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces for Car2go Project in Osaka, Japan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These forces are: Threat of New Entrants, Bargaining Power of Suppliers, Bargaining Power of Buyers, Rivalry among Existing Competitors, and Threat of Substitute Products or Services as summarised in the diagram below. A circumspective analysis of these forces, in relations to the proposed Car2go project in Osaka, Japan, is succinctly done below. Main Discussion Threat of New Entrants In essence, the arena of transportation (both public and private) is flooded with constant entry of new entrants based on the ever increasing need for people to move from one place to another. As a result, there is always a ready market for new entrants. Osaka, Japan being a reportedly business hubbub, entry of new competitors is bound to happen and we therefore have to be ready and prepared to deal with that. To deal with the above challenge, Car2go plans to widen the scope of its businesses such that the entry of new competitors will not have much effect to their business endeavors. Pilot programs of these new diversifications are already underway in the current branch in terms of their products and services. By the time we move into Osaka, Japan, the company will have already known the relevant and fitting plans to put in place while also being aware of the ones to be ignored. Bargaining Power of Suppliers In assessing the aspect of d ealing with the bargaining power of suppliers, we have to chiefly consider the elements of cost and time to be utilized in the project. Given the fact that Car2go already has working system of suppliers that get to internationally supply the company in countries and regions like U.S.A, U.K, Canada, Germany, France, Austria and Netherlands; the company intends to use the same suppliers for purposes of cost and time efficacy.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More However, there are instances that there may be complications like delays by the suppliers or even jurisdictional restriction by traffic laws thus limiting some transportations (Watanabe 4-7). In times like these, new suppliers will be required so that the company is able to duly serve its new customers at Osaka, Japan. To this regard, Car2go will therefore have to increase the number of suppliers so as not to be af fected by any market fluctuations. Bargaining Power of Buyers Studies by our market researchers indicate that a good number of public and private transportation and car rental companies exist in Osaka, Japan. With the rise in the number of outlets offering products and services similar to Car2go, customers will have a wide range of options to choose from. In effect, this will result into a price war ultimately favouring customers. In other words, the customers will have a high bargaining power thus making cost-plans for quite challenging for service providers. In regard to our case, Car2go is renowned for having good prices for its buyers. This good price system will be replicated in the Osaka, Japan so no difficulty is expected. Rivalry among Existing Competitors As glimpsed in the previous section, Osaka, Japan already has a significant number of companies offering products and similar to ours. Rivalry from these existing competitors is bound to fierce and expectedly tough. Howeve r, scholarly and market reports from various quarters indicate that Car2go is reputed for having good relations with other market players so very minimal challenges are expected. Even more importantly, the existing players only act as a motivation for Car2go to work extra hardââ¬âsomething which is bound to ensure that continuous progress ensues. Our good brand name in car rentals services as well as in both public and private transportation will also be a plus for Car2go in edging off the competition from the existing competitors. Threat of Substitute Products or Services In todayââ¬â¢s fast growing and highly competitive market of transportation, there is need for organizations to adopt an effective strategy for marketing in order to gain revenues and gain competitive advantage as well as meet its operational goals (Czinkota Ronkainen 186-190). This is driven by the presence of competition among companies for the already relatively-full market. A company that has inferior products and services rarely attains success, or survives in such a market (Porter 201-205). This occurs since those companies that have effective marketing strategies win a large pool of customers in comparison to those companies that have weak marketing strategies.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces for Car2go Project in Osaka, Japan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Over time, success in Car2go is usually measured in terms of gains (market share, revenues), and meeting operational goals. So, in order to fulfil these vital aspects of success, we intend to implement a diversification plan which entails venturing into other regions while bettering its product and services. In effect, the threat of substitute products or services will be thwarted while the companyââ¬â¢s targets are met thus ensuring that we achieve overall success. Summary Just like most business ventures, our pro ject plans, in regard to Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces, may result in success or failure. It is for this reason that this plan calls for everyone involved to ardently play his/her part. It is only by doing this that we can have some assurance that our plans will be foolproof of the usual market hiccups and the never-ending economic challenges. Additionally, as seen in many other companies who have followed the formula we are proposing to institute the new branch in Osaka, Japan; we expect some copycat competition from our numerous competitors after we launch our branch. So in order to stay a step ahead of such competitors, we are planning to periodically revolutionize our operations after commencement in Osaka, Japan. Revolutionizing and bettering the myriad of facets entailed in Porterââ¬â¢s 5 forces will definitely offer Car2go competitive advantage over other market players. Finally, it is worth noting that the Japanese market, to be specific, and the Asian market, in general, is h ighly dynamic and sophisticated. In order to survive in it, we not only intend to use strategies that have previously worked in our other branches but we also intend to customize and adapt our transportation products and services to the existing market intricacies. This way, our success will be highly guaranteed. Works Cited Czinkota, Michael R., Ronkainen, Ilkka A. International Market. 8th Ed. 2007. London: Cengage Learning, Print. Porter, Michael E. Marriage Essay Example Marriage Essay Marriage Essay Do not Judge, or you to will be Judged. 1. How have you frequently heard this verse used in Christian circles? Consider example from sermons, Bible studies, blobs, and your own personal use of the verse. I have been in small groups within my Church that have often seen other people who are involved in repeated acts of sin, yet our small group has often turned away from getting Involved in helping this person in sin. My small group has referred to this scripture on more than one occasion as the reason of not addressing another embers sin. While I did not necessarily agree with this belief I chose to go along with it. By choosing to go along with this belief it began to become reality in my life, and I began to believe it more. The culture we now live in has a tendency to promote accountability and responsibility. 2. How should this verse be properly understood according to the author of The Most Misused Verses in the Bible? Colourimetric Assay for Paracetamol Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Colourimetric Assay for Paracetamol - Essay Example ble results. The chief advantage of colourimetric methods is that they provide a simple means for determining minute quantities of substances. The upper limit of colorimetric methods is in general the determination of constituents which are present in quantities of less than 1 or 2 per cent (J. W. Robinson). The principle behind any colourimetric technique for paracetamol analysis is that paracetamol undergoes oxidation-reduction reaction with an aqueous solution of iron(III) ion. In the reaction, iron(III) ions are being reduced to iron(II) ions. The iron(II) ions produced in the redox reaction is reacted with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) solution forming prussian blue which is an intense blue colored complex. The concentration of the paracetamol in a given solution may be determined by measuring the color intensity of the Prussian blue solution. ... Upon measurement of the intensity in terms of absorbance, Beerââ¬â¢s law is used to calculate the concentration of the paracetamol in micrograms per milliliter. To permit selection of the most advantageous technique, effects of variables such as temperature, heating time, acidity and reagent concentration have been evaluated. Another simple, accurate and fast method of determination of paracetamol is based on the measurement of the intensity of the yellow color that will develop when the sample containing paracetamol is reacted with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in 2 molar solution of hydrochloric acid after heating (Usifoh, et. al.). This yellow color is usually absorbed in the visible region where the wavelength is 450 nm. It is normally stable for several hours and its intensity is directly proportional to the concentration of the drug, that is, Beerââ¬â¢s law is obeyed. This colorimetric technique is mainly used for analysis where the paracetamol is contained in a particular raw material or in pharmaceutical dosage forms such as tablets and syrups. Finally, a fast, automated colorimetric method for the determination of samples containing paracetamol is the latterââ¬â¢s reaction with acidic hypochlorite followed by coupling with alkaline phenol which produces a blue indophenol dye, which is measured colourimetrically (J.W. Murfin). This method is generally used for tablets containing paracetamol and a granule formation containing paracetamol. MATERIALS AND METHOD A stock solution of paracetamol has been prepared for analysis. The stock solution is prepared by dissolving appropriate amount of 0.0023 mol/L paracetamol solution in 10 mL of NaCl solution and made
